EMPLOYMENT LAW: Workers Warn City of Layoffs’ Consequences
February 24, 2010
Los Angeles - City workers from different departments who are in danger of receiving layoff notices showed up at the L.A. City Council chambers to warn officials that other services will suffer and will be affected if layoffs will continue.
The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and other workers argued that some services, including the sewage and fire departments, may not be at its best in terms of serving residents as lesser employees will be available to respond to their problem.
The city currently faces a $212 million deficit and around $485 million is projected in the next fiscal year. The layoffs and other cost-cutting measures are expected to save the city at least $300 million.
