UCI Workers Laid Off, More to Follow Before Month Ends
August 25th, 2009
Twenty-one workers from facilities and maintenance division were laid off August 20 as a result of the budget cuts in UC-Irvine, reports said.
Cathy Lawhon, the university spokeswoman, confirmed that workers had been laid-off as a part of cost-cutting measures that took effect July 1. The said cuts aim to decrease by 20% the university’s facility expenses.
The laid-off workers were notified after the schools’ yearly luncheon because there have been problems regarding the early release of notices. It is said that the laid off workers have permanently reduced UCI’s budget by 16%.
The biggest layoffs are expected to be followed as the university released five more notices to workers in the Student Academic Advancement Services programs.
