EMPLOYMENT LAW: Transgender Call for Equal Employment Rights
May 17, 2010
Sacramento – Transgender individuals and their supporters have asked the government for equal rights in employment including benefits such as healthcare subsidies and other assistance. The announcement was made by the group during the first Transgender Advocacy Day held at the state Capitol last Monday.
The group also complained about discrimination and the difficulty of finding a job as a transgender. They also asked the government to include boxes like sexual orientation and gender identity in government forms.
The transgender stressed that these things would help them get more publicly-funded job-services assistance. They also pointed out that an average California worker earns more than a transgender person with the same degree, giving example of the disparity and unequal treatment they get from employers.
The group said they staged the rally to call the attention of lawmakers to their plight.
