DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION: Sysco Charged for Violation of Americans with Disabilities Act Provisions
April 27, 2011
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma– Sysco, a commercial food distributor in Oklahoma, was charged for violating some provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act that prohibit making illegal inquiries about an employee’s disability or terminating him/her due to such illness without justifiable reason.
Allegedly, Sysco customer relations expert, Amanda Thompson, was fired after the company discovered her illness. Sysco asked her to undergo a medical examination but then she was terminated before the deadline to submit a medical release had lapsed.
Sysco terminated Thompson from her position despite the fact that she has been performing her duties very well.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission decided to file the lawsuit in US District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma after the pre-litigation settlement procedure failed.
