EMPLOYMENT LAW: Redwood School District Plans to Lay off More than a Dozen Employees
February 9, 2010
Redwood- The planned mid-year budget cutting plan of the Redwood City School District will involve the lay-off of more than a dozen employees.
According to the district administrators, the cuts will save about $603,000 in the final months of the school year out of the $78 million budget.
It will also save the district some $1.6 million annually in the succeeding school years.
The move was proposed due to the anticipated cut in educational funding as a result of the looming budget deficit.
The budget cutting plan proposes to lay-off at least 11 temporary classroom teachers for a savings of $261,000; five custodians for a savings of$ 67,000 and one accountant for a savings of $23,000.
The plan also proposes to cut down hours of four instructional aides, remove three vacant positions and freeze expenses on library materials.
District officials are also continuing negotiations with the teacher’s union about shortening the nest school year by five days to save about $1.3 million.
According to Chief Business Official Raul Parungao, the cuts will place the district in a better position to absorb state cuts.
