EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION: Pregnancy Discrimination Suit Filed against Pennsylvania-based Housekeeping Company

September 13, 2010

Little Rock, Arkansas – The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has filed a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit against a housekeeping services company. The lawsuit was filed against Crothall Services Group, of the Crothall Healthcare Inc, of Wayne, Pennsylvania, in behalf of Taquesia Neal.

According to the lawsuit, Neal was hired by the Crothall last November 5, 2008 to work as a housekeeper at the Arkansas State Hospital on the 3:00-11:00pm shift.

However, when her supervisor discovered that she was pregnant she was told that she will not be allowed to work in her condition.

Neal claimed that she was then given a choice between resigning and termination, while given the option of being rehired after her childbirth.

She refused to resign and she was consequently fired from her job.

In April 2009, Neal had her baby and she tried to contact her previous supervisor about returning to work but the company did not respond to her calls or her new employment application.

Crothall has not made any comment regarding the lawsuit as of the moment.

According to EEOC attorney Katharine Jones, employers are prohibited from refusing to allow female workers to work based on discriminatory stereotypes about pregnancy.

She added that this type of blatant sex discrimination is a top priority of the commission.
