EMPLOYMENT LAW: Overtime Pay Bill for Farm workers Pushed

July 19, 2010

Sacramento – A group of farm workers have asked Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to pass a bill that would pay overtime work for farm workers.

The group urged payment for time-and-a-half for farm workers who normally work 10 hours a day, 60 hours a week. They received only about $9 to $10 an hour. The workers said they deserve to be treated the same way as other hourly employees in California.

The group presented their proposal to one of the governor’s aides who said that the governor has not yet taken a position on it yet.

California earns about $36 billion in agribusiness each year.

The governor has 12 days to take action on the proposal.
