EMPLOYMENT LAW: Nearly 13,000 California Nurses to go on Strike on June 10
May 28, 2010
Los Angeles – The National Nurses United has announced last week that there will be a one-day strike by approximately 13,000 nurses from various California hospitals next month to address concerns about hospital’s nurse staffing that were not dealt with at the contract bargaining negotiations.
According to the union’s bargaining director Jill Furillo, the one-day strike will be on June 10.
The union claims there is a shortage of staff to treat patients which results to more workload for the current nurses.
They also claim that this is against the California mandate that requires specific staffing levels on different areas of the hospital.
One of those mandates is the one nurse for every two critically-ill patients rule.
Furillo also said that the one-day strike will include nurses across various hospitals such as Citrus Valley Medical Center, Olympia Medical Center, San Pedro Hospital and all University of California Hospitals.
