EMPLOYMENT and LABOR: Layoff to Affect 15 Percent of LAUSD Schools

March 23, 2011

Los Angeles – Approximately 952 Los Angeles Unified Schools will be affected by layoffs due to the continuous decline in the number of enrollees and budget problem. The layoff will also affect nearly 1000 teachers from different schools in the county, reports said.

In San Fernando Valley alone, some 193 schools are endangered of losing teachers, librarians, counselors and nurses starting this school year.

According to reports, LAUSD is about to face a budget deficit amounting to $408 million this school year. The district is also anticipating a huge drop in enrollment due to students transfer to charter schools.

John Deasy, who will assume his district superintendent post next month, also expressed frustration in having to reduce the number of educators, disregarding their competence and contribution to the education of students.
