EMPLOYMENT LAW: LAPD to Pay $125,000 Over Discrimination and Retaliation Suit

March 6, 2010

Los Angeles - A white police officer has won in discrimination and retaliation lawsuit against his Latino supervisor and will be awarded with $125,000 damages for pain and suffering.

In a court ruling on Friday, officer Paul Waymire will receive compensation to cover “emotional damages” he experienced while working in the Los Angeles Police Department.

However, the jury ruled out that Waymire will not receive compensation for lost income.

Waymire has accused his Latino supervisor of “treating him unfairly because he is white”, adding that he was “passed over for promotion even if he was more qualified compared to the other applicants.”

The police officer is a recipient of the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor, the state’s most prestigious public safety award, after saving a man from a burning car in 2005.
