EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION: LAPD Officer Awarded with Over $700,000 in Retaliation, Discrimination Case

July 23, 2010

Los Angeles - A black Los Angeles police officer has been awarded with $705, 804 after he won a case alleging that he was discriminated due to a work-related injury and race issues.

The case, which was filed against LA in July 2009, alleged that Officer Malcolm Thomas was subjected to insinuations that he was a gay.

Reports stated that the heterosexual officer was mistreated while he was working in a unit, which trains LAPD recruits.

He alleged that officers and a sergeant in the unit continuously demean him. Aside from receiving offensive text messages, he was also called “Tae Bo” and Billy Blanks” in reference to aerobic and guru workout system that he created.

Reports said Thomas sustained a knee injury while on-duty in May 2008. He alleged that his sergeant made him perform activities, which worsened his injury.

After he complained about it, he was stripped of his badge and gun and stopped receiving his salary.

Reports said most of the award given by the court is for Thomas’s lost future earnings.
