Gender Discrimination as Experienced by Women

Women can sometimes be discriminated against for various reasons. At times, discrimination against them can be so inhumane that the society of today has been trying to eradicate it in many ways possible. But still, there are some incidences wherein many won’t notice about it, but is currently happen right at their backs. One example of this is the case of women filling a discrimination case against a Wal-Mart branch in California.

According to reports, the company has allegedly denied its women employees of promotion and salary raise due to bias in gender. The number of plaintiffs who filed charges in court had accounted to 45,000 women employees.

This is quite surprising since California is known to be one of the states who have high regard for the people’s differences. For one, it is one of the most culturally-diverse states in the US. The cultural diversity of major California cities such as Los Angeles and Santa Monica contributed to the ever-growing number of applicants and employees who are working there. Some business owners, though, care less towards their employees and prospective ones, especially if they base they have done something discriminatory in nature towards them. This kind of situation usually affects women employees, who are somewhat inferior in most aspects of employment.

Gender discrimination in California must be taken as one of the first priorities of the current state administration. It might give the impression that since there are less reported cases related to it, this does notmean that only a few people experience this kind of maltreatment.

The Equal Rights Advocates (ERA) defined as when an employer is acting differently towards an employee due to their gender and the treatment that was being made resulted to a negative effect to the terms and conditions of employment. The terms and conditions handoff the aspect of employment comprises of the following:

  • Position
  • Wages
  • Title
  • Hiring
  • Termination
  • Training

Discrimination in its broadest sense is the unfair treatment done to a person because he or she is different from others. The wide variety of the aspects of life that this had covered through the years includes the issue of race, age, and country of origin, color and gender. During employment where it normally happens, it is differentiated from harassment. The latter happens at the different facets of employment while the former is directed at a personal level.
