EMPLOYMENT LAW: Garbage Workers Start Two- Day Strike in San Mateo after Stalled Negotiations

August 25, 2010

San Carlos – The stalled negotiations between Allied Waste Industries and the union that represents the garbage workers has led to a 48-hour strike that started today in San Mateo County.

According to Peg Mulloy, Allied Waste spokesperson, at least 13 workers from the Ox Mountain Landfill participated in the 2 day protest.

The contracts of the workers had expired at the end of 2009 and no resolution has been reached up to now.

The workers are being represented by Teamsters Local 350 union.

Aside from the initial 13 protesters, about 250 more workers from the San Carlos facility have decided to walk off their job and join the strike to support their colleagues’ cause.

Fortunately, even if the strike was unexpected, Allied Waste was able to hire replacement workers for Wednesday and Thursday.

Despite that, residential customers may still experience delays in garbage collection as commercial customers may be prioritized while the strike is ongoing.
