Employment Union Agrees to Compromise of State’s Measures
March 22, 2009
California – The largest state union approved on Saturday a contract which modifies Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s emergency measures in bridging the budget gap, reports said.
Around 91% members of Service Employees International Union approved the modified contract that includes one furlough day each month which would decrease the imposed cut to 4.62% compared to other state union employees that still have a 9.2% incise.
Instead of following the governor’s previous plan of considering Columbus Day and Lincoln’s Birthday as an unpaid holiday, SEIU workers agreed to simply take off two paid days of their choosing.
The contract also protects SEIU employees from mass lay-offs except under special circumstances.
The union is said to be composed of 95,000 employees that is about the half of state’s workers.
